Erfgoedstuk
Voorwerp
JMD-P-2187 Fles,
Periode:
17e eeuw
Deelcollectie:
Japans porselein
Object:
Fles
Beschrijving:
Opschrift:
Ds: VANDr : Hof.
Tekst engels:
Globular bottle on footring, the body gradually tapering to the neck with a double mouthrim. Decorated in underglaze blue with peony sprays and birds with a reserved triple lobed medallion with the inscription 'Ds:VANDr:Hòf.'. On the neck elongated, pointed leaves, the tips becoming vertical lines.
This type of bottle is called an ‘apothecary bottle' after the versions that were ordered without an inscription in Japan for the ‘surgeon's shop’ in Batavia. They were also ordered by private traders who used them for wine or spirits. Sets of six, nine or twelve were stored in a decorative wooden box, called a 'keldertje' in Dutch. Occasionally, these privately ordered bottles were inscribed with the owner's initials or marked according to their contents. This bottle is unique; it is the only known example with the owner's name written in full. Unfortunately, the owner could not be identified. The letters 'Ds.' are an abbreviation for dominus (Reverend), which might indicate that this Mr. Van der Hof was a Dutch Reformed minister serving in Batavia, the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon, India, or even The Netherlands. The bottle (possibly one of a set) was probably ordered in Japan, either by him or on his behalf. Information C.J. A. Jorg 10-2019; Jan Veenendaal (dealer of colonial furniture) has figured out that the Japanese Van der Hof bottle did not belong to a pastor, as I always thought because of that Ds in front of his name. But that Ds denotes a first name: Dionys van der Hof, who was an alderman in Batavia, lived in the most expensive district and died there in 1706.
